Men's Football

Men's Football

Football on the Mornington Peninsula started in June 1887 when Frankston’s finest young men took on their southern neighbors from Mornington in the first organized local match of our indigenous game. The simplicity & romance of two local towns playing an annual footy game has long since passed as other villages grew and wished to challenge the football ability within the area. Since 1887, the team wearing Frankston’s original red & black colours has grown from annual invitational matches against Mornington or Dandenong through a variety of league structures as the population growth of the Peninsula and the policies of administrators came together to drive change.

Of all the competition restructures over the past 130 years, the most relevant to the Peninsula football that we know today was the 1987 merger of the Mornington Peninsula Football League and the Nepean Football League to bring together the majority of current member clubs of the MPNFL. Whilst deemed to be good for football at the time, the flow on effect was that the Bombers decades old rivalry, or in Mornington’s case century old, against teams like Mt Eliza, Seaford, Edithvale-Aspendale & Sorrento was interrupted.

Football season 2018 ushers in yet another change to our football landscape & the Frankston Bombers could not be happier with the new competition where the Peninsula’s oldest colours will compete in MPNFL Division One and reignite the battle with our previous arch enemies . Coach Beau Muston & the playing group are excited & embracing the challenge required to play division one football. With some great recruits and a strong pre season behind them, they are primed for success. Bombers of old, who are strong and bold, will remember epic games against those traditional foes which will bring out their passion and support for the red and black.

The first chapter may have been written at The Point in Mornington in 1887, but the story continues…..
